Stake a young tree the right way

Most staking does more harm than good. Use a wide, soft tie in a figure-8 so the trunk can still flex, anchor it to a low stake with a clove hitch, and plan to remove it after one growing season.

Figure-8 arbor tie

A soft, wide loop that supports a stem without cutting into the bark.

Step-by-step diagram showing how to tie a figure-8 arbor tie
  1. Wide collar on the stem. Pass a soft strap or webbing loosely around the trunk, leaving slack so it cannot girdle the bark.
  2. Cross into a figure-8. Cross the two tails between the trunk and the stake to make the 8's waist.
  3. Around the stake. Take both tails around the stake and back to the waist.
  4. Tie off with give. Knot it so the trunk can still sway a little; rigid ties weaken the trunk.

Clove hitch

A quick crossing hitch for a post; back it up for anything that matters.

Step-by-step diagram showing how to tie a clove hitch
  1. First wrap. Loop the rope over the post once.
  2. Cross over. Cross the working end over the first wrap and around the post again.
  3. Tuck under. Pass the end under the second wrap, beside the standing line.
  4. Pull both ways. Tighten by pulling both ends; add a half hitch if it must hold.

Common mistakes

What to use

Soft tree webbing or strap (never bare wire or thin rope against bark), one or two short stakes, and a reminder to take it all off next year.

How this page was made

Knot steps follow standard practice and are drawn here as original diagrams. Written and checked by Alex Maxey; method on the methodology page. Last verified 2026-06-16. Knots are skills, not guarantees: practice on something that does not matter before something that does.
